Web guide

How to use StepBranch on the web

Version 2.0 — covers sign-in, workflow mapping, folders, diagrams, and export. For the iOS and macOS app, see the separate app guide.

Get started

Signing in

StepBranch for web uses Apple or Microsoft sign-in — there's no separate password to create. Your account is the same one you use on the iOS or macOS app, so your workflows sync automatically across every device.

  1. 1Go to stepbranch.app
  2. 2Choose "Sign in with Apple" or "Sign in with Microsoft"
  3. 3Approve the sign-in with your Apple ID or Microsoft account

Note

The first time you sign in, StepBranch creates your account automatically — there's no separate registration step.

Quick start

Creating your first workflow

  1. 1From the Workflows screen, tap the + button (top right)
  2. 2A new workflow opens immediately, named "New Workflow"
  3. 3Tap the name field to rename it
  4. 4Tap + Add Step to add your first step

Tip

Every change saves automatically as you type — there's no separate save button, and nothing is lost if you navigate away.

Organisation

Folders

Folders help separate workflows by team, project, or topic. A workflow can belong to one folder, or stay unassigned.

Create a folder

  1. 1From the Workflows screen, tap the folder+ icon (top right)
  2. 2Type a name and tap Add

Move workflows into a folder

  1. 1Open the workflow and use the Folder dropdown under "Organisation" — or —
  2. 2From the Workflows screen, tap Select, choose one or more workflows, then "Move to Folder"

Tip

Select mode also supports bulk delete — select multiple workflows, then tap Delete to remove them all at once.

Core feature

Building a workflow

Add a step

  1. 1Open a workflow
  2. 2Tap + Add Step (top right, or at the bottom of the step list)
  3. 3Fill in the step content, and optionally System, Role, and Location

Set what happens next

Every step has a Destination — the step it leads to. By default, new steps are linked automatically in the order you create them. To send a step somewhere else (skip ahead, loop back, or end the process early), open the step and change its Destination under "Routing".

Tip

If a workflow was imported or has older steps with no destination set, an "Auto-Wire" button appears above the step list — it links any unconnected steps in sequence automatically.

Add a decision point

  1. 1Open the step you want to convert
  2. 2Turn on "Decision point"
  3. 3Tap Add Option to create each branch (e.g. Yes / No, or any custom labels)
  4. 4Tap a branch to add steps inside it

Note

A decision point routes to its branches instead of a single destination — each branch carries its own chain of steps forward independently.

Delete a step or branch

Tap the trash icon next to any step, branch, folder, or workflow. Tap it once to arm it, then again within a few seconds to confirm.

Diagrams

Viewing your workflow as a diagram

  1. 1Open a workflow
  2. 2Tap the diagram icon (top right)
  3. 3Use the layout button to switch between vertical and horizontal flow
  4. 4Tap any step in the diagram to jump straight to editing it

The diagram always reflects the real flow of your process — it follows each step's actual destination, including any branches, jumps, or loops you've set up.

Sharing

Exporting a workflow

From inside a workflow, tap the export icon to choose a format:

CSV spreadsheet

Step-by-step table compatible with Excel and Google Sheets, including routing and branch labels.

JSON (StepBranch)

A portable backup of this workflow, can be re-imported on another device.

PDF

Print-ready document via your browser's print dialog.

Draw.io / diagrams.net

An editable diagram file you can open and modify in Draw.io.

Tip

CSV exports number every step in the order the process actually runs, following each step's destination — including decision branches, which list all their possible next steps together.

Data safety

Importing a v1 backup

If you have an older StepBranch backup file (.json) from before sign-in and sync existed, you can bring it into your account.

  1. 1Tap your account icon (top left) → Import v1 Backup…
  2. 2Choose the .json file
  3. 3Review the summary — workflows, folders, steps, and branches it contains
  4. 4Tap Import

Important

Importing adds these as new workflows in your account — it doesn't check for duplicates by name. If you've already created workflows with the same names, you may end up with two copies. It's best to import into a clean account, or rename/delete anything that would clash beforehand.

Sync

How syncing works

Every workflow, folder, and step you create on the web is stored in your account and appears automatically on your iOS or macOS app signed in with the same Apple or Microsoft account — and vice versa. There's no manual sync button to press; changes save the moment you make them.

Support

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to create a separate account for the web app?

No — sign in with the same Apple or Microsoft account you use on iOS or macOS, and your workflows appear automatically.

Can I use StepBranch without an internet connection?

The web app requires an internet connection to load and save changes. The iOS and macOS app supports offline use with sync resuming once you're back online.

What happens if I delete a workflow by mistake?

Deleted workflows are not immediately erased from the database, but there is currently no "Recently Deleted" recovery screen in the app — contact support promptly if you need to recover something.

Can two people edit the same workflow at the same time?

StepBranch is built for a single signed-in account across your own devices, not shared multi-user editing. If two devices on the same account edit at once, the most recent change is what's kept.

How do I move a workflow between web and iOS?

You don't need to — signing in with the same account on both keeps everything in sync automatically.
